Why Is My Radiator Cold at the Top?
For a radiator that gets warm lower down but stays noticeably cold across the top while the central heating is running.
What this usually means
A radiator that is cold at the top but warm lower down usually has trapped air inside it. Bleeding the radiator releases that air so hot water can fill the radiator properly again. If the same radiator repeatedly fills with air, several radiators are affected, or bleeding does not solve it, the heating system may need professional investigation.
What may be causing this
Trapped air in the radiator
Clues: The top is cold while the lower section warms up. You may also hear gurgling or bubbling as the system starts.
What to do: Bleed the radiator once it is cool, then check the boiler/system pressure afterwards if your system has a pressure gauge.
Air is repeatedly entering the heating system
Clues: The radiator improves after bleeding but the cold top returns frequently, or several radiators keep collecting air.
What to do: Treat repeated air build-up as a system symptom rather than endlessly bleeding the same radiator. A heating engineer can check pressure loss, leaks and other causes.
A different circulation problem
Clues: Bleeding produces no trapped air, the whole radiator is cold, or the temperature pattern does not match a simple cold-top problem.
What to do: Check that the valves are open and compare the radiator with others. If the pattern remains unclear, use a more specific diagnosis or arrange professional help.
How to check what is happening
This pattern strongly points toward trapped air.
Noise alongside a cold top is another common sign of trapped air.
That is a different fault pattern. Worcester Bosch notes that cold-at-bottom radiators can indicate sludge or debris rather than trapped air.
Can you fix this yourself?
Bleeding a radiator is normally a straightforward homeowner task if the valve is accessible, the system is switched off and cool, and you are comfortable checking the system pressure afterwards.

What you can safely try

Switch the heating off and let the radiator cool
Do not bleed a hot radiator. Wait until the radiator and nearby pipes are cool enough to handle safely.

Protect the floor and open the bleed valve slowly
Place a cloth and container beneath the valve. Turn the key anti-clockwise only enough to hear air escaping. A quarter to half turn is commonly sufficient.

Close the valve when the air has escaped
When the hissing stops and water begins to flow steadily, close the valve clockwise. Do not overtighten it.

Recheck the heating and system pressure
Turn the heating back on and check whether the radiator now heats evenly. Bleeding can reduce system pressure, so follow your boiler manufacturer’s instructions if the pressure needs topping up.
Call a heating engineer if…
- The bleed valve is damaged, seized or starts leaking and will not reseal.
- The boiler/system pressure repeatedly drops after topping up.
- The radiator keeps filling with air again soon after bleeding.
- Several radiators have recurring cold spots or the heating system is noisy throughout.
