Why Is One Radiator Not Heating Up When All the Others Are?
For one radiator that stays completely cold or barely warms while the other radiators in the property heat normally.
What this usually means
If one radiator is not heating but all the others are, the fault is usually local to that radiator rather than the boiler. A closed or stuck thermostatic radiator valve (TRV), a closed lockshield valve, trapped air, poor balancing or a local restriction can stop hot water flowing through it. If the radiator is cold only at the top or bottom, use the more specific cold-top or cold-bottom checks; if it is cold all over, start with the valves and whether either connecting pipe becomes hot.
What may be causing this
The thermostatic radiator valve is closed or stuck
Clues: The TRV is turned up but the radiator stays cold, particularly after the heating has been off for months or the valve has not been adjusted for a long time.
What to do: Make sure the TRV is set above zero. If the valve mechanism appears stuck or the control head is damaged, use a heating engineer rather than forcing or dismantling the valve body.
The lockshield valve is closed or set too low
Clues: The radiator has recently been removed, decorated around, replaced or adjusted and now receives little or no flow.
What to do: Check whether the lockshield has been left closed. If you do not know its previous balancing position, avoid large adjustments and have the system balanced if necessary.
Air is preventing proper circulation through the radiator
Clues: The radiator is not uniformly cold: the top is colder than the bottom, or it gurgles and improves briefly after heating starts.
What to do: Bleed the radiator only when the heating is off and cool, then re-check system pressure according to the boiler instructions.
Flow to that radiator is restricted or the system is poorly balanced
Clues: Both valves appear open but the radiator still stays cold, or it only warms when other radiators are turned down.
What to do: A heating engineer can check balancing, valve operation and local pipe or radiator restrictions without repeatedly altering the rest of the system.
How to check what is happening
The boiler is producing heat and the problem is more likely to be local to this radiator or its branch pipework.
A valve, balancing or local-flow problem is more likely than the classic trapped-air or sludge patterns.
Hot water is reaching the radiator area but may not be circulating through the valve or radiator properly.
The TRV head or valve mechanism may not be opening as intended.
Can you fix this yourself?
A homeowner can check that both radiator controls are open, identify whether the radiator is cold all over and bleed it if the symptom is specifically trapped air. Do not remove valve bodies or loosen pipe fittings. If the radiator remains completely cold with the rest of the system working, a heating engineer can check the valve and flow.

Confirm it is only one radiator
Run the heating long enough for several other radiators to become clearly warm. This separates a local radiator fault from a boiler, programmer or whole-system problem.

Check whether it is cold all over
Feel the radiator carefully from top to bottom. If only the top is cold, trapped air is more likely; if only the bottom is cold, sludge or restricted circulation is more likely.

Check both radiator controls
Make sure the TRV is turned up and check that the opposite lockshield has not obviously been left closed after previous work. Do not force a seized control.

Compare the inlet and outlet pipes
With the heating running, carefully note whether either pipe warms. A hot pipe beside a cold radiator is useful evidence of a local valve or circulation restriction.

Get the local flow checked if it stays cold
If the valves appear open and the rest of the system works normally, a heating engineer can test the TRV, lockshield, balancing and local pipework before replacing the radiator unnecessarily.
Call a heating engineer if…
- A radiator valve or pipe connection starts leaking.
- The valve is seized and would need significant force or dismantling.
- Several radiators are actually cold, suggesting a wider heating fault.
- Boiler pressure is outside the normal range in the manufacturer instructions.
- Any check would require loosening a pressurised heating connection.
