Why Is My Radiator Hot at the Top but Cold at the Bottom?
For a radiator that heats across the top but stays noticeably cooler or cold along the lower section, even after the heating has been running for a while.
What this usually means
A radiator that is hot at the top but cold at the bottom usually points to poor water circulation through the lower part of the radiator. In UK heating systems, sludge and corrosion debris are common causes because the heavier material settles low down and can restrict flow. A partly closed or sticking valve, or a badly balanced system, can produce a similar pattern. Bleeding is normally more useful when the top is cold, so if the top is already hot, repeatedly bleeding the radiator is unlikely to fix the real cause.
What may be causing this
Sludge or corrosion debris has collected in the radiator
Clues: The top warms normally but a broad cold band remains along the bottom. Other radiators may also have cold patches or the system may have dirty-looking water when serviced.
What to do: A heating engineer can confirm the condition of the system water and clean or flush the affected radiator or system where appropriate.
Water flow through the radiator is restricted
Clues: The radiator warms slowly, one side may be cooler than the other, or the inlet pipe is hot while heat does not spread properly through the panel.
What to do: Check that user-operated radiator valves are not accidentally closed. If the valve is sticking or the flow remains poor, have it checked rather than forcing it.
The heating system is out of balance
Clues: Radiators nearest the boiler heat quickly while more distant radiators are slow or patchy, especially when several radiators are calling for heat.
What to do: System balancing adjusts the flow through each radiator so hot water is shared properly. This can be done by a competent homeowner who understands lockshield adjustment, but many people prefer a heating engineer.
The radiator or pipework has a more severe blockage
Clues: The bottom stays completely cold despite correct valve positions, or the radiator barely heats even after the rest of the system is hot.
What to do: A more thorough clean, radiator removal or system flush may be required. Avoid repeated bleeding because trapped air is not the usual cause of a cold bottom.
How to check what is happening
This pattern fits restricted circulation or sludge much more closely than trapped air.
Hot water is reaching the radiator but may not be circulating through it properly.
System balancing or a local flow restriction may be contributing.
Further bleeding is unlikely to solve the problem; sludge or poor flow should be investigated instead.
Can you fix this yourself?
You can check valve positions, compare radiator temperatures and confirm whether the pattern is genuinely hot-top/cold-bottom. Basic balancing is possible if you understand your heating system, but removing radiators, flushing dirty system water or treating sludge is better left to someone competent if you are not already comfortable with heating-system maintenance.

What you can safely try

Make sure it really is a cold-bottom problem
Run the heating long enough for the system to settle, then compare the top and bottom of the radiator carefully. A slight temperature difference is normal; a distinct cold lower band is the useful clue.

Check that the radiator valves are open
Make sure the thermostatic valve, if fitted, is calling for heat and that no user-operated valve has accidentally been closed. Do not force a stiff valve spindle or lockshield.

Compare it with the rest of the system
If the first radiators on the circuit are roasting hot and later ones are struggling, the system may need balancing. If just this radiator has a cold bottom, local sludge or a valve restriction is more likely.

Do not keep bleeding it just because it is cold
Air collects at the top of a radiator, so bleeding is aimed at a cold top. If the top is already hot and little air comes out, move on rather than repeatedly dropping the system pressure.

Get the radiator or system cleaned if the cold band remains
A heating engineer can check the system water, radiator valves and circulation, then decide whether the affected radiator needs flushing or whether the wider system needs cleaning and protection.
Call a heating engineer if…
- A radiator valve leaks or will not move normally.
- System pressure drops after bleeding or maintenance.
- Several radiators have severe cold spots or the boiler is noisy as well.
