Why Is My Laminate Flooring Lifting or Buckling?
For laminate boards that have started to rise, tent, ridge or push upward at the joints instead of lying flat.
What this usually means
Laminate is usually installed as a floating floor, so it needs a small gap around walls, thresholds, pipes and fixed objects to expand and contract. If that movement is blocked, the floor can lift or buckle. Moisture is the other big clue: a leak, standing water or damp subfloor can swell the wood-fibre core. Before trying to flatten anything, work out whether the floor is simply trapped at the edges or whether water has reached the boards.
What may be causing this
The floor has no room to expand
Clues: The floor rises in a ridge or tent but the boards do not look water-stained or swollen. The problem may be worse near a wall, doorway, pipe or fixed object where the expansion gap is missing or blocked.
What to do: Check the manufacturer’s required perimeter and doorway gaps. A flooring installer can remove the pressure point and restore the correct clearance without pinning the floating floor down.
Water or persistent moisture has swollen the laminate core
Clues: Board edges look puffy, raised or discoloured, the problem is near a sink, appliance, external door or known leak, or the surface changed soon after a spill or plumbing problem.
What to do: Stop the moisture source first. Drying the room is important, but visibly swollen laminate often needs damaged boards replacing because the fibre core may not return to its original shape.
Seasonal humidity or a large continuous floor is creating movement
Clues: The floor changes with the seasons, crosses several rooms without a break, or runs a long distance through doorways. It may feel tight at thresholds even though there is no obvious leak.
What to do: Compare the installation with the manufacturer’s expansion-joint rules. Large or complex layouts may need additional movement joints or profiles.
The floating floor has been pinned by a fixed object or trim
Clues: The problem began after new skirting, a kitchen island, fitted unit or other fixed item was installed. The floor cannot slide freely beneath or around it.
What to do: Do not screw or nail the raised boards down. Have the obstruction corrected so the floor can move as designed.
How to check what is happening
Moisture has probably reached the fibre core. Treat the water source before thinking about cosmetic floor repair.
A blocked or undersized expansion gap is a strong possibility because the floating floor has nowhere to move.
That timing is useful. Water points toward swelling; new fixed joinery or trim points toward the floor being pinned.
Laminate naturally moves as room humidity changes, so inadequate movement space becomes more obvious when the floor expands.
Can you fix this yourself?
You can safely inspect the floor, stop a moisture source and check the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Do not try to solve buckling by screwing, nailing, gluing or putting heavy weight on the raised area. Trimming a perimeter gap or replacing locked boards is better handled by someone who can preserve the click joints and expansion space.

Rule out an active leak before touching the floor
Check nearby sinks, appliances, radiators, external doors and pipework. If the laminate is wet or swollen, stop the water source and dry the area. Repairing the floor before the moisture problem is solved usually means doing the job twice.

Look for swollen edges rather than just a raised ridge
Moisture-damaged laminate often shows puffed seams, darkening or a rough raised edge. A dry floor that is simply tenting without swollen board edges is more consistent with restricted movement.

Check whether the floor has room to move
If a piece of removable trim can be lifted without damaging the room, look at the floor edge rather than forcing the raised boards. Compare the visible gap with the exact installation instructions for your floor.

Do not pin a floating floor down
Avoid screws, nails, glue through the boards or heavy furniture placed on the ridge to force it flat. A floating floor needs movement space; pinning it can move the stress somewhere else.

Separate a movement problem from damaged boards
If the boards are dry and undamaged, correcting the expansion space may allow the floor to settle. If the core has visibly swollen, plan for replacement of the affected boards after the moisture source is fixed.
Call a flooring specialist if…
- There is an active plumbing leak or unexplained moisture beneath the floor.
- Several boards are visibly swollen or the click joints have broken.
- The floor runs beneath fixed kitchen units or an island and you cannot see how it was installed.
- The raised area is large, worsening or creating a trip hazard.
- You would need to remove fitted skirting, door frames or multiple rows of flooring to correct the expansion space.
