Why Is My Light Switch Buzzing?
For a wall light switch or dimmer that makes a persistent buzzing, humming or crackling sound when the light is on, off or being dimmed.

What may be causing this
Dimmer and lamp are not compatible
Clues: A faint hum occurs mainly when dimming, often after LED lamps were changed, but there is no heat, crackling, smell or flickering.
What to do: Check the dimmer and lamp manufacturer's compatibility information. Do not open the switch; an electrician can confirm the load and fit a suitable dimmer if needed.
A connection is loose
Clues: Buzzing or crackling is intermittent, the light flickers, or the switch has become warm or discoloured.
What to do: Treat this as a professional electrical fault. Loose connections can generate heat and arcing, so the switch and circuit connections need testing by an electrician.
The switch mechanism is worn or damaged
Clues: The switch feels rough, does not operate consistently, the noise changes when it is touched, or the accessory is visibly old or damaged.
What to do: Stop using a damaged or unreliable switch and have the accessory replaced and the wiring checked.
Electrical arcing is occurring
Clues: The noise is more like crackling or sizzling, especially with flickering, scorch marks, a hot faceplate or burning smell.

How to check what is happening
