Why Does My Internal Door Swing Open by Itself?
For an ordinary hinged internal door that slowly swings open after you leave it partly open instead of staying where you put it.
What this usually means
An internal door that swings open by itself is usually being pulled by gravity because the hinge side of the frame is not perfectly plumb. The frame may have been installed slightly out of vertical, shifted over time, or the hinges may be misaligned or not sitting flush. Loose hinge screws can make the effect worse. Air movement can move a very light door, but a door that repeatedly swings the same way in still air usually points to frame or hinge geometry rather than a mysterious draught.
What may be causing this
The hinge jamb is out of plumb
Clues: The door always drifts in the same direction, even with windows closed and no obvious draught.
What to do: Check the hinge side of the frame with a spirit level or plumb line. Significant error is best corrected by adjusting or resetting the lining rather than forcing the latch.
The hinges are not aligned vertically
Clues: One hinge is packed differently, recesses are uneven, or the door has recently been rehung.
What to do: A carpenter can correct hinge positioning or packing so the hinge pins form a true vertical line.
Hinge screws are loose or the hinge leaves are not flush
Clues: The door drops slightly, hinge leaves move, or screw heads sit proud and the gaps around the door are uneven.
What to do: Tighten only loose screws that still grip properly and make sure the hinge leaves sit flat. Damaged screw holes need a proper repair rather than larger screws fitted blindly.
The frame or door has moved or twisted
Clues: The problem appeared gradually and is accompanied by uneven gaps, rubbing or a twisted-looking door stop.
What to do: The door and lining need checking for movement, warping or settlement before trimming the door.
Air pressure is moving a very light door
Clues: The door moves only when another door or window opens, an extractor starts, or there is a strong cross-draught.
What to do: Confirm the airflow pattern before altering the hinges. If the door behaves normally in still air, no geometry repair may be needed.
How to check what is happening
Gravity acting through an out-of-plumb hinge line is likely.
The frame geometry explains why the door will not stay put.
Hinge installation is contributing to the problem and may be repairable without altering the whole frame.
The lining may be out of square or the door/frame may have shifted.
Can you fix this yourself?
Checking the frame with a spirit level and tightening genuinely loose hinge screws are reasonable homeowner checks. Small hinge packing adjustments can be DIY for someone experienced with door hanging, but resetting an out-of-plumb lining or dealing with a heavy or fire-rated door is better left to a carpenter.

Close nearby windows and doors and switch off strong extract ventilation briefly. Test whether the door still drifts open in otherwise still air.

Hold a spirit level vertically against the hinge jamb. Even a small lean can be enough for gravity to move the door.

Inspect the hinges and screws
Check that hinge leaves sit flat in their recesses and that screws are secure. Tighten only screws that are genuinely loose and still have good grip.

Look at the gaps around the closed door
Uneven gaps can show that the door is hanging out of square or that the lining has moved, which helps decide whether hinge adjustment or frame correction is needed.

Adjust the hinge line rather than forcing the latch
A carpenter can pack, reposition or reset hinges and, where necessary, correct the lining so the door hangs vertically and stays where it is left.
Call a carpenter if…
- The door is a fire door or has a self-closing device whose performance must be preserved.
- The door is very heavy and would need to be removed without suitable support.
- The frame is visibly loose from the wall.
- Large cracks or movement around the opening suggest a wider building-movement issue.
- Hinge screws no longer grip and a secure repair is not obvious.
